Chapter Fourteen
Aftermath and Revelation
“We were all fish out of water, even me. People shouldn’t even know about demons, let alone have to fight them.”
~ Shadowcat
The pentagram town or whatever it was lay two hours behind them, and they had another twenty miles, at least, before reaching the keep. Jake knew they needed to bed down for the night soon, but he wasn’t all that excited about the prospect.
It could have been a lot worse, Jake thought as he walked along the dark path and scanned for trip wires in their path.
He didn’t want to talk about what had happened. In fact, none of them did. Talking about what had happened while they were still inside that damn forest—where the air didn’t move, the sunlight didn’t shine, and the feeling of being watched wrapped around them like a straightjacket—would only make them feel worse.
Jake took stock of their losses in his head.
Cole’s clockwork mount was still serviceable, but only if they required it to walk. It could no more run than it could fly, in the state it was in. Skeeter had said that she’d probably be able to fix it, but not without the tools she kept in her suitcase. Skeeter’s wokie was dead, and they’d had to leave its carcass where it had fallen. Onawa’s wokie, terrified and mad with pain, had leapt over the outer wall and disappeared into the forest—taking with it his bedroll, food, water, and what few possibles he’d brought along. Sik-Sik had come out of the fight scraped up a little, but in one piece. Timba, on the other hand, had several bad lacerations on her face and belly that Ganesh had sewn up and bandaged. She was also walking with a slight limp of her front left leg.
And Lumpy … Jake thought. It pained Jake to even think about it. He looked over his shoulder to where they’d sewn up a couple of grazes along the bull’s withers and hump. The injuries weren’t bad, and the great bull hadn’t done more than stomp his feet when Skeeter used a needle and thread soaked in whiskey to sew them closed. They’d transferred Skeeter’s saddlebags to Lumpy, and she now rode behind Sharc on his mechanical mount, while Onawa rode behind Krang. They’d left twenty-one beast-troopers where they’d fallen, gathering up what few weapons the creatures had used against them.
Jake shook his head slowly. It could have been a lot worse.
Cole rode up beside him and fell in step next to Lumpy. When Jake looked up, he saw the question hovering in his riding partner’s eyes.
“The Peacekeeper,” he said quietly. Jake was willing to talk about that part, and he had no doubt that Cole was ready to burst when it came to that part of the fight. The others didn’t seem to think much of it, but they only knew that its magic was good against paranormals. Jake had never gone into any details, not even with Skeeter. Cole had been in enough fights with Jake to know that Jake always reloaded when he got to six.
